Summary

In the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift: an absolute sense of smell。 As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs。

But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and frest-cut wood。 Then one day he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume"—the scent of a beautiful young virgin。

Told with dazzling narrative brillance, Perfume is a hauntingly powerful tale of murder and sensual depravity。

Found myself seduced into the world of perfumery and unadulterated evil--- and a decent geography/history/sociology course。

I saw the movie version of this novel when it came out and I don't remember a thing about it。 That was good because it meant I enjoyed the book a lot more。 We are in the pre-revolution France and there's a baby born who has no scent。 We are told emphatically that his poop still smells, but rather that he exudes no scent otherwise。 This will come up later as it turns out that the tradeoff for this is the very fine-tuned ability to have perfect smell (like perfect pitch, but smell。 You get it)。 Th I saw the movie version of this novel when it came out and I don't remember a thing about it。 That was good because it meant I enjoyed the book a lot more。 We are in the pre-revolution France and there's a baby born who has no scent。 We are told emphatically that his poop still smells, but rather that he exudes no scent otherwise。 This will come up later as it turns out that the tradeoff for this is the very fine-tuned ability to have perfect smell (like perfect pitch, but smell。 You get it)。 This ability along with being quite unhinged leads him eventually to murdering a woman in order to capture her "fatal" scent。 This all takes him down a path of obsession looking for more and more exotic scents and working to become the most virtuosic perfume maker in the world。 I want to rate this both higher and lower for various reasons。 Higher because of the absolutely wonderful sections of narration about the Paris perfume and scent industry 200+ years ago。 It's beautiful, it's wild, it's ecstatic writing at it's very best。 Even through translation, the passion of those sections are just gorgeous。 Lower because I have zero zero zero idea what to do with this big ending。 Not the end end, but right up to the end! I won't tell you, but if you've read this book you know what I am talking about and if you do read this book, you'll learn。 I promise you won't miss it。 。。。more

Wow I definitely have never read anything like it and I love a book that hammers in onto the senses。 It made me jealous of people with a good sense of smell but also made me think about how self consuming passions can be and that final satisfaction is an illusion。 The ending especially was insightful into how crime and criminals are viewed and treated。

Gripping, easy to read, the plot flows well, and above all, the writing is genuinely chuckle-worthy at all points。 Even though the premise is somewhat grim, the author manages to portray Grenouille in a loveable fashion with his wit and dedication to his mission。The notion of using olfactory cues to subtly manipulate others is certainly an interesting one。 The imagery invoked by the graphic metaphor 10/10 - Engagement 10/10 - Plot 10/10 - Writing 10/10 - OverallProbably my favourite book so far! I was predisposed to liking this book, I love perfumes。 A little secret- one of the reasons that I was smitten by my husband when we first went out was a specific perfume he wore that day。 I just made him smile :)It is an incredible book。 I was rapt。 It is a story about social isolation, about not belonging and being accepted in the society and the negative effects it can wrought on one’s mind。 It’s also a story about obsession, a singular pursuit for perfection regardless of the facts。Delivery I was predisposed to liking this book, I love perfumes。 A little secret- one of the reasons that I was smitten by my husband when we first went out was a specific perfume he wore that day。 I just made him smile :)It is an incredible book。 I was rapt。 It is a story about social isolation, about not belonging and being accepted in the society and the negative effects it can wrought on one’s mind。 It’s also a story about obsession, a singular pursuit for perfection regardless of the facts。Delivery of the climax was masterful。 The moment captured the heart of the book in one beautifully horrific frenzy of emotions and desires。 I knew it was coming (l’d seen the movie many years ago) though I don’t think the movie could ever quite capture the intensity and euphoric nature of the situation。The book has a slightly menacing undertone that is quite hypnotic。 It’s an angry, dangerous little book。PS - I don’t remember the movie being even a tiny bit funny, or possibly the ruthless world of literature has stripped my psyche of all the sensitivity。PPS - I kicked myself a lot after I finished reading it, disappointed that I didn’t read it sooner! 。。。more
